What
gravitates you to poetry over other styles of writing?
Every day
life gravitates me to poetry. I see so many things that move me
to write. I write short stories and other things but with
poetry; you can sum up a lot with very few words. It’s
intimate, its direct, it’s more concentrated.
What
motivates your muse?═ What's the inspiration behind Kahn
Davison?
My past,
my present and my future. Losing my parents and my grand
parents motivates me. I want to make sure their faces are
smiling in heaven. My family motivates me. My kids Malachi,
Jaylen, Maykia, and my fiancée Tasha motivate me to write and be
successful. My family’s success in the future depends largely
on me.
How long have you been writing and performing poetry/spoken
word?
I’ve been
writing for well over 10 years and performing for only about 3.
What is your most important conveyance in your art? How do
you want people to feel once being exposed to Kahn Davison?
I really
just want people to feel like they “know me” when I they read me
or hear me. I am a very personal poet. I put all of my
indiscretions, flaws, mistakes, skeletons, trials and
tribulations out there for all to see. I’m not ashamed of my
life nor embarrassed of it. A lot of people have been through
similar things as me, and I just try to connect with everyone.
Tell us about your experiences in Europe.
I was in London for 10 days and
it was great. I had six performances and I enjoyed and I feel I
was appreciated at all of them. The vibe and the flavor of the
people is so different there. I met brothers and sisters from
different parts of West Africa, as well as lot from the states.
There were parts of London that were full of beautiful buildings
form 3 different time periods and there were Ghettos and
rundown parts of London. They were very appreciative of my
poetry and enjoyed my performances. Its nothing like leave the
U.S. to open your mind. The world is so big! Traveling not
only opens your mind but it broadens your work. Content in
poetry is largely based on personal experiences so traveling and
venturing out will improve your work.
Tell us about the new CD "Nothin' But Kahn".
Its my best and most current
work. My goal was to make a well balanced poetry CD for people
who like poetry. There are tracks with music, there are live
tracks, there are a cappella tracks and there are even live
tracks that have had music added to them later on.
In my poems I address social
issues like wars going on in the Sudan, Uganda, Middle East. I
address problems going on in schools, I have inspirational
poems, erotic and love poems and poems about jazz. It’s a
diverse CD.
What is next on the agenda for Kahn?
In the
coming weeks I’ll be filming my first independent movie
(tentatively titled A Poet’s Love)……..That’s the main project.
I’m a member of the 2005 Detroit Slam Team, and of course I’m
still wiring poems, etc.. but all other major project have been
put on hold.
